After Isaias, Sandestin Reopened Inland First and the Beach Is Still Catching Up

Hurricane Isaias came ashore near Destin on the evening of Oct. 9 with 105-mph sustained winds, according to the National Hurricane Center's advisory. The National Weather Service's storm summary logged a 54-knot gust at Miramar Beach. It also recorded storm surge and surf erosion along the Walton County coast. On Oct. 12, Sandestin posted that it was "open and operational" and would take new arrivals again on Tuesday, Oct. 13. That was four days after landfall.

The order things came back in matters more for a resident's week. The golf courses, the restaurants and the Hotel Effie outlets returned at nearly full strength within the first week. The Gulf edge came back in pieces. The county is still weighing emergency repairs to the eroded dunes, and design work on a larger beach renourishment project likely won't be finished until next October. So for the rest of this fall, the bay side and the inland half of the resort are carrying most of the weekly routine, with the beach catching up behind them.

What the resort's own table shows

Sandestin's Storm Center page keeps an operations table, and the latest version is dated Thursday, Oct. 15. Read it closely and you can see the recovery order. Almost everything away from the Gulf is listed at normal or near-normal hours:

  • Golf: All four courses are open. Links runs 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Baytowne, Burnt Pine and Raven each run 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Burnt Pine is also open for dining from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Hotel Effie: Ovide serves brunch from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Sweetbay Coffee is open 6:30 to 11 a.m., The Lobby Bar 3 to 11 p.m., Ara Rooftop Pool & Lounge 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Spa Lilliana 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Bay side: Marina Bar & Grill is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the Baytowne Marina Office is open, and Fat Tuesdays in the Village of Baytowne Wharf is open 2 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Getting around: The Sandestin Tram Service and the Sandestin Bike Shop are both open.
  • Everything else: The Sandestin Fitness Center is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Dunes Putting Course runs 1 to 9 p.m., with 24-hour self-service on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The gaps are worth knowing too. On Oct. 12 the resort said Tennis & Pickleball would stay closed until further notice. By Oct. 15 the Sandestin Tennis Center was listed as limited, with seven courts open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the pickleball courts set to reopen Friday, Oct. 16. The same table lists the Baytowne Carousel as closed. Fat Tuesdays is the only Village of Baytowne Wharf business named on that table. If you have a favorite Village shop or restaurant, check with it directly before you walk over.

The Gulf side is listed as well, which is the encouraging part. Beach & Pool Services is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Beach Club is open from 10 a.m. to close, and The Beach House Restaurant is serving 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The beachfront amenities are running. What lags is the sand and the dune line underneath them.

The beach is open, through fewer doors

Five days separate the first two snapshots of the Gulf front. On Oct. 10, WJHG reported that South Walton Fire District crews were assessing 26 miles of beach, that lifeguard towers were staying off the sand, and that nails and other debris could be hidden in the sand and the Gulf. The station also passed along the reminder that double red flags mean the water is closed and that storm-damaged poles could leave warning flags missing.

Walton County's beach access update for Oct. 15 at 11 a.m., reposted on The Pearl Hotel's storm page, showed something closer to normal for the Miramar Beach regional access. It also showed a narrower way in:

  1. Restrooms are open.
  2. The east dune walkover is open.
  3. The middle and west walkovers are closed, and the county asked beachgoers to use the east one.
  4. Power and water are on, and the beach flagpole is working.
  5. Crews are still removing debris.

So the Miramar Beach access was down to one walkover out of three in that update. On a busy afternoon, that means a single crossing point. Some other regional accesses along the same stretch were limited in other ways. At Santa Clara and Seagrove, the ADA ramps were closed and visitors had to use the stairs. The flagpoles at Gulfview Heights and Scenic Gulf Drive needed repair, and the one at Seagrove wasn't working at all. In that update, the county reminded beachgoers that a missing flag does not mean the water is safe.

Those details may change by the time you head out. The South Walton Fire District's flag conditions page shows the live flag. AlertWalton.org sends county notices, and the Storm Center page says you can also text the resort's ZIP code, 32550, to 888777.

Why the dunes set the pace for the season

The dune work has no settled schedule yet. In a WJHG report from Oct. 17, Walton County Director of Beach Operations Josh Ervin said the county is drawing up plans for a federally funded beach renourishment project. He said the design will likely be finished in October of next year.

For the short term, WJHG reported that the county had met with FEMA and was looking at emergency repairs to the eroded dunes. Ervin told the station that "in areas where you have a nourished beach and have an ongoing maintenance period, there would be some eligibility there." He said the county planned to bring the item to the Board of County Commissioners at its next meeting through its coastal engineer, Taylor Engineering. WJHG also reported an open question about whether the renourishment project would apply to private beaches. The station said it was still waiting for an answer from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

That sets the frame for the next few months. Emergency dune work, if commissioners approve it, would be the nearer step, and the larger project is still in design. Through the rest of 2026, expect crews and equipment on the sand from time to time, and expect walkover closures to come and go. The amenities that never depended on the dune line are the ones you can count on for a regular schedule. That's why the fall calendar below leans so heavily on Baytowne and Grand Boulevard.

The dates still ahead, from Oct. 22 on

Both the Village of Baytowne Wharf and Grand Boulevard at Sandestin are still listing fall events. Neither calendar is dated, and neither carries a note about the storm. Grand Boulevard says its events are weather permitting and subject to change. The Baytowne Wharf calendar, the Grand Boulevard events page and Sandestin's event listings will have any changes, so check before you go.

Date Event Where
Sat., Oct. 24 Farmers' Market; Pilates on the Lawn, Kendra Scott x Lululemon Grand Boulevard
Wed., Oct. 28 Wednesday Night Concert Series, Forrest Williams Village of Baytowne Wharf
Fri., Oct. 30 Barktoberfest Grand Boulevard

Sat., Nov. 21 14th Annual Sparkling Wine & Holiday Lights, 4 to 6 p.m. Village of Baytowne Wharf
Sun., Nov. 22 Turkey Trot, 7 to 11 a.m. Baytowne Marina

The last weekend of October is the busiest stretch. Friday, Oct. 30 has Barktoberfest on Grand Boulevard and Hocus Pocus on the Baytowne lawn. Saturday, Oct. 31 has Halloween on the Boo-ulevard and Trick or Treat Street. Grand Boulevard is at 495 Grand Boulevard in Miramar Beach. The Village is reachable inside the resort on the Sandestin Tram Service, which the Oct. 15 table lists as running.

November's dates are clustered close together too. The Hometown Holiday Parade, Sparkling Wine & Holiday Lights and the Turkey Trot at Baytowne Marina fall on three days in a row, Nov. 20 to 22. Every event on that table is held on the bay side of the resort or along Grand Boulevard, away from the dune line.

A short routine for the weeks ahead

Before a morning round or an Ovide brunch, check the Storm Center table, since its hours are the resort's own and it updates as conditions change. Before a beach afternoon, check the South Walton Fire District flag page, and go to the Miramar Beach access expecting to use the east walkover. Before an evening at the Village, confirm that the shop or restaurant you have in mind is open, because Fat Tuesdays is the only Baytowne business on the resort's list so far. For the dune repair, the next step is the Walton County Board of County Commissioners' decision on emergency work, which Ervin told WJHG would come up at the board's next meeting.
